WHAT IS THE INTERNET OF THINGS?

Intercommunication

The Internet of Things, otherwise known as IoT, is a giant network of connected things that can communicate with each other. The concept of IoT is to connect any smart items with an on/off switch to the internet, to us and to each other. At the home level think of cellphones, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, coffee makers, audio players, lighting, refrigerators, security systems, doors and windows, heating and air conditioning, headphones and wearable devices to name just a few. A smart fridge, for example can send you an alert when food items are past their sell by dateĀ  and make intelligent decisions like telling you to replenish. On a larger scale there will soon be smart cities and industries with connected sensors having the ability to monitor just about anything.

The reason the Internet of Things is now possible and at the forefront of discussion is due to the widespread availability of computers and broadband internet, a decrease in the cost of connecting to the internet, the production of more items with wifi capability and the continuing escalation of smartphone ownership.
