WHAT IS A SMART HOME?

Connectivity

The term smart home is bandied around so much and is part of the everyday lexicon.  There is an assumption that everyone knows what it means. I think most people have a vague idea but it is a broad term that changes all the time. Definitions also vary.

THE BASIC IDEA

The idea of a smart home is that it provides comfort, security, energy savings and convenience and offers the added benefit of being able to control functions even when away from home.  You can use your phone to turn off the stove,  lock the front door or turn on the lights welcome you home.

One simple definition of the smart home is a residence that has multiple appliances, smart lighting, smart heating, air conditioning, TVs, home entertainment audio and video systems, window and door operations, home security and camera systems that are capable of communicating with each other and can be controlled remotely from any room in the house, as well as remotely from any location in the world by means of a phone or internet.

SMART IS GREEN

Not only do smart home and smart devices offer great convenience, a smart home can also save you energy and money. Smart lighting and smart thermostats have monitoring systems that allow homeowners to see exactly how much energy they are using.

SMART IS CHANGING ALL THE TIME

It is difficult to keep up with the smart home revolution as new smart devices are coming on the market all the time. Smart refrigerators for example are now able to catalogue contents, suggest menus, make healthy eating recommendations and re-order regularly used food as it is used up. Everything except eat the food for you!

But Smart Home technology is exciting and although there may be some frustrations ahead, It is going to change the way we live. Just think how comfortable we are now with our smartphones. We love them and would not want to live without them.
