SMART HOMES NEEDS A STRONG WIFI SIGNAL

SMART HOMES NEEDS A STRONG WIFI SIGNAL

WiFi Is King

There is nothing more annoying than experiencing a dropped wifi signal. You have an up to date home theater set up. You are in the middle of watching the series finale of Downton Abbey on your smart TV and you can a No Signal error message. Curses! The latest smart devices are only as effective as the wifi signal needed to power them.

WEAK ROUTER

We recently experienced this problem and called in our cable provider, convinced that the problem lay with them. The technician confirmed that our router was not strong enough to handle our smart devices. He also confirmed that this was the number reason for him being called out. Your router may have been initially adequate for your needs, but each time a new smart item is added, the wifi signal will be spread more thinly.  Improving your wifi signal is the first thing a smart home designer will tell you to do.

MAP OUT THE STRENGTH OF YOUR WIFI

Mapping out the strength of your wifi signal will allow you to see whether your signal can serve a smart home.  There are different apps that make this very easy. Our technician used an Android app called WiFi Analyzer that has a real time signal strength meter to show exactly where the signal is strong and where it diminishes. NetSpot works for Macs. It took our technician all of one minute to tell us that we needed a stronger router, one with lots of antennae.

GET A STRONG ROUTER

Our router was struggling each time we added a smart item such as smart lighting or a smart thermostat. Routers that split your smart devices between the 2.4GHz frequency and the 5.0 GHz network help spread the load. The 2.4 Ghz frequency is very overcrowded.  Dead spots can be improved with plug in extenders or boosters.

The smarter smart homes become, the more important it is to make sure your wifi foundations are strong.
