One Turns Off Quickly, One Doesn’t

Underfloor heating, also known as radiant heating, operates with two main systems:

  1. Hydronic: heated water is pumped from a boiler through a network of tubing
  2. Electric: an electric current is applied to a flexible heating element

HYDRONIC SYSTEMS

Hydronic systems work best in colder climates. They are costly and complex for contractors to install but less expensive to operate and therefore a better option if you are considering underfloor heating as the primary heating source throughout the whole house. The reason this type of heating is not ideal for our lovely warm Orange County climate is that it takes a long time to cool down. In Orange County we need to turn heating on and off at the flick of a switch depending on the temperature of the day. In winter we can experience lots of gorgeously warm days. With hydronic heating you would be sweating in your home.

ELECTRIC SYSTEMS

These are easy for flooring contractors to install and frequently come in mat or sheet form, where the electrical coils are already attached to a mesh backing that is laid on the sub floor. Many of these sheets have adhesive strips to hold them in place during installation.

If your flooring contractor is putting underfloor heating in an awkward shaped space, loose wire installation is preferable as it allows for easier customization. Your flooring contractor can advise you on the most suitable system for you.

FOIL HEATING MATS

If you want to put heating under carpets, you can use a foil heating mat that is specifically designed for use without thinset or adhesive. The electrical wires on all these systems are very thin so they won’t raise the floor level when installed.

If you are doing a flooring renovation, it is well worth investigating underfloor heating with your Orange County flooring contractor. You can put the heating on a programmable timer so the floor is warm and comfortable at the times you want it.
