UNDERFLOOR HEATING DATES BACK TO THE ROMANS

Warm Tootsies

Even though Pasadena enjoys a blissfully warm climate, there are still chilly days when warmth under the toes would feel wonderful. Since many of the homes in Pasadena and southern California are not well insulated against the cold, one can sometimes struggle to stay cozy during the winter months. Underfloor heating is comfortable and luxurious.

ROMAN BATHS

Underfloor heating is particularly inviting in a bathroom and it is not a new invention. Underfloor heating dates back thousands of years to ancient Roman times when going to the public baths was part of their social life. It was a bit like going to the spa where people would relax, hang out and chat with friends and catch up on the local gossip. No Facebook to rely on.

HYPOCAUST

The floors were kept warm thanks to an ingenious system of heating known as the hypocaust.  Slaves had the job of fanning hot air from continuously burning wood fires into a hollow space beneath the elevated marble floors. Can you imagine lying around on marble if it wasn’t warm? Bathrooms are still the most popular room to install underfloor heating.
