DOES SELF PRIMING PAINT WORK?

Professional painters and  contractors know that preparing the painting surface properly is the key to a smooth, long lasting finish. It doesn’t matter how carefully you apply the paint or how beautifully you roll if the foundation is not good.

WHEN DO YOU NEED PRIMER?

The first thing a painting contractor will do is assess the painting surface and see what repairs have to be made. In most situations once holes are filled and cracks are repaired, primer is applied.

Painting contractors in Pasadena recommend using a primer in the following situations:

  1. Painting on new, raw surfaces such as wood, metal, plaster, new drywall
  2. Covering up stains such as water damage, rust, crayon, grease, mildew
  3. Changing from oil to acrylic paint
  4. Blocking odors such as smoke
  5. Drastically changing color from dark to light

WHAT DO PRIMERS DO?

The main job of a primer is to seal a surface and provide a stable uniform area for paint to adhere to. Contractors and painters know that the paint has to have something to bond with in order for it to be long lasting and durable. Paint has a completely different purpose. Its main function is to add color and sheen or finish.

SELF PRIMING PAINT

Self priming paint allows you to skip the priming part and go straight to applying paint color. This may sound like a great idea and an excellent time saver but painters and contractors in Pasadena suggest only using it on a perfect surface. Contractors and painters only recommend using it to paint over an already painted area. One could argue that in this situation you don’t need a primer at all.

REGULAR V. SELF PRIMING

Self-priming paints tend to be thicker than regular paint and provide very good coverage. They have quality resins in the paint to help with adhesion. Self priming paints are more expensive.

KEEP WITH TRADITION

From years of experience, painters and contractors know exactly when a primer is needed. They also know exactly which primer to use since there are many different ones for different painting situations. Read our post about the importance of primers TOP PASADENA PAINTERS EXPOSE A COVER STORY.

Self priming paints seem to appeal more to homeowners than contractors and fall between not being good enough for preparing a surface that has issues and maybe not being needed at all on a wall that has already been painted.
