DISPOSING OF PAINT SAFELY IN PASADENA

Know Your Water and Oil

If you are using one of the many top Pasadena painting contractors or painting companies for your painting project, they can advise you on how to dispose of any leftover paint safely. Keep some of each paint color used for touch ups. Just remember to label it properly with the date, manufacturer, room, color and color recipe. Our blog post TIPS FROM TOP PAINTING CONTRACTORS ON STORING PAINT gives suggestions to ensure the paint is usable the next time you want it.

You may have excess that you do not want to store. Paint should be disposed of responsibly and not dumped or poured down the drain. Double check with your Pasadena authority to ascertain the local rules regarding paint disposal.

Generally speaking paint disposal depends on whether the paint is water or oil based.

OIL-BASED PRODUCTS

Oil paint, stains, varnishes and thinners are toxic and flammable and generally cannot be dumped or disposed of in the trash. They should be taken to a hazardous waste center. Many painters and painting contractors prefer oil for jobs that require a durable tough finish such as kitchen cabinets.

WATER-BASED PRODUCTS

Latex and water based paints can actually be disposed of in the trash as long as the paint has dried out and is solid. If there is only a little paint in the can, take the lid off and leave it in a warm, well ventilated area. In Pasadena it is easiest to just leave the paint out in the sun. It should dry up in a couple of days.

If the paint can is more than a quarter full you may have to mix the paint with something else to help it solidify. You can try paper, mulch or cat litter. Once the paint is tacky and won’t spill, you can put the paint in the trash. Make sure the paint lid is off.

PAINTCARE DROP OFF

If you have full paint cans left over that you don’t need, your painting contractor may take them. Otherwise take them to one of the 5 PaintCare drop off locations in Pasadena.
