PREPARING YOUR PASADENA HOME FOR THANKSGIVING

Fall Colors Inspire

As the cooking prep starts, you may wish you had more space in your kitchen and had been able to do a full kitchen remodel in your Pasadena home ready for all the entertaining. Although a total kitchen renovation would be fabulous, a few simple tricks can help you prepare your home for Turkey Time.

CLEAN WITH ESSENTIAL OILS

The minute I have guests, I reappraise my home with a critical eye. What looks perfectly fine for me most of the time is suddenly not adequate. It’s as if all my guests were sanitary inspectors as I feel the need to clean every nook and cranny in the house. I try and remind myself that no-one is going to giving me points out of ten for how clean my house is.  I suggest you do the same. Just lately I have moved over to natural cleaning products and my favorite is a spray bottle filled with water and several drops of lavender essential oil. I spritz away happily on every surface and my house smells wonderful.

GIVE IT A GOURD

Gourds make wonderful centerpieces or welcoming arrangements at your front door. They come in such a wonderful variety of interesting shapes and fall colors. Use small pumpkins with a name tag for your place settings.

WRITE THANKS ON LEAVES

Some families share their thanks around the dining table, for other the thoughts are more private. A compromise between the two is to create a Thanksgiving board. Cut out different shaped autumn leaves and ask your guests to write one thing they are thankful for on a leaf, then pin it to the board. Those words and thoughts will then be present in your home throughout the day.

DON’T FORGET THE MANTEL

You may or may not need a fire on Thanksgiving Thursday depending on where you live. In Pasadena it will probably be warm. However the mantel is still always a focal point and asks to be decorated. Try garlands of autumn leaves that can be bought from any craft store intertwined with fairy lights. As the sun goes down they will add warmth and comfort to your gathering place.

ADD NATURE TO YOUR TABLE

More than for any other celebration, I like a nature-inspired theme for my table and interior decorations. Add foliage, pumpkins, gourds and flowers in rustic orange shades.  Place sprays of greenery on plates and add your guests’ names on a simple brown tag. The naturalness seems to fit the occasion perfectly.

Happy Thanksgiving.
